They're "dumbing" own wow IMO.
I've never agreed with this statement.
It's like saying a stereo system only sounds good if it comes without a manual.
kinda, only the manual has to have 2 pages in it. One shows you a picture of the stereo set up and the other showing some guy, dancing to the music. Basic as basic can get.
As someone who plays a ret pally now, how can you say they are dumbing things down. Ret has the simplest, easiest rotation that a trained monkey could perform. Cata brings some much needed complexity to the class to reward good play and punish poor play.
I spent a considerable amount of time playing cata and although a lot has changed in the beta since I quit it, it is a much more complex game.
The easiest way I can explain it is this...Take any board game you play. We will use monopoly in this example since I assume you know how to play it. When you play "my" monopoly, you are only allowed to puchase houses every third turn, must reroll double 5's if you rolled a 7 last turn and you get 17 extra dollars everytime you pass go or pass someone who is in jail.
I just made monopoly a much more complex game, but removed skill. Now, you can't decide when to buy houses, you do it whenever you get the opportunity. You get a little extra money, but not enough to affect the outcome but it is just more numbers to keep track of. The dice rerolling rules, well they are ridiculous to say the least.
Now, lets say I adjust the rules to this...When you land on income tax, you always pay 200 dollars, no 10% option. You can buy property during anyone's turn, not just your own. You get $100 if you land on free parking. These rules don't make the game more complex. In fact, the first rules takes compexity away. What it does is speed up the game, makes things easier to remember and rewards a small amount at occasionally.
My point is this. They are giving certain raid buffs to everyone. They are making dps classes do the same damage. They are cutting down the talent trees. Was your enjoyment in this game buffing people before pulls? Was your enjoyment based on putting talent points into +1% damage talents. The fact is that you will still be with 25 other people, trying to kill some of the most complex raid fights and are trying to do so without dying. That has stayed the same, they have only made it easier to get there. Back to my monopoly example, the rules I put in the second time just get us to the end quicker, which is the best part of monopoly. The cata changes are just getting people into raids quicker. No one I know of wants a return to the vanilla wow days where 1000 people in the whole country finished Naxx.
I seemed to have went a little long winded but I did so to say this. The game is still the same game you love. If you enjoyed Lich King, you will enjoy cata (as far as game mechanics). Don't be afraid of cata because they are making things simpler because I can tell you that they are as complex, skillful and as enjoyable as they have ever been.
